UK government keeps overseas aid promise

IF you joined the campaign. IF you emailed your MP. IF you wrote to George Osborne. Today is the day all your incredible support paid off.

We did it! UK Government keeps aid promise

On Wednesday 20 March, the UK Government announced that it is keeping its promise to spend 0.7% of national income on aid. Millions of people living in poverty worldwide now have a brighter future - all thanks to the thousands of campaigners who spoke out and convinced our politicians not to back down.

The budget announcement is an incredible achievement. And we'd like to say one massive thank you. For every action. For every email. For every petition. For every time you've spoken up to demand enough food for everyone. Thank you.

The UK Government's commitment to overseas aid will mean more kids in schools, more trained nurses, and more clean water. It means whole communities will face a brighter future.

A 43-year-old promise

This announcement has been 43 years in the making. Back in 1970, 22 countries committed to the 0.7% aid promise. Only five delivered. Until now. The UK has just become the first G8 country to keep its promise.

Even in tough times, we will not turn our back on the world's poorest people. That's the message we've sent out - loud and clear - to other rich countries. More aid means more people with the opportunity to feed their family and work their way out of poverty. It's an incredible achievement, and it's all yours. Thank you for believing in a world with enough food for everyone.

What now?

It doesn't stop here. With the G8 coming up, we need to put pressure on other rich countries to follow the UK's example. And, with tax dodging by UK companies in developing countries making the hunger problem even worse, we need to keep the pressure on politicians to address the issue in the upcoming Finance Bill.
