In response to the report ‘Global Britain: A Twenty-first Century Vision’ from The Henry Jackson Society, published today, Oxfam’s head of government relations Jon Date said:
“Redefining Britain’s aid budget in this way would be a recipe for disaster. The primary purpose of aid is – and should continue to be – to fight poverty. Any other approach risks aid being spent badly and jeopardising the lives of the world’s most vulnerable.
“If the Government wants to improve aid spending and bolster our position as ‘global Britain’, abolishing a world-leading aid department and rejecting global aid rules would be self-defeating. The British public deserve a transparent aid budget focussed on helping the world’s poorest people, which DFID has proved it is best placed to deliver.”
