 My role involves ensuring the quality of our work in Liberia - and making sure we are consistently monitoring, evaluating, reporting and updating what we do. Our work here is wide-ranging - testing water to make sure it's clean, teaching people how to keep water safe, helping farmers get rice from the paddy fields all year round, supporting refugees from the Ivory Coast, and enabling women to develop skills producing handicrafts, so they can earn a living and generate a decent income. I am proud of the brand and reputation Oxfam has created in Liberia.

Access to basic services like water and sanitation is still very low across Liberia so we work hard to ensure communities have a source of safe water.   • We also provide technical support and training to women's groups to help them develop ways of earning a secure income. Here, Elsie C. Wolo works with other seamstresses at the Oxfam supported Virtuous Women Multi-purpose Co-operative in Monrovia. Many women in the group have set up small sewing enterprises that are generating an income for them and their families.
  • Lydia Flomo, attending to seedlings, is a member of the 50-strong Gbalin Co-operative which was founded with the support of Oxfam. Many members of this group, and others supported by Oxfam, have been able to send their children to school for the first time thanks to their increased income from farming.
  • We are also ready to help in times of conflict. When election-related violence in neighbouring Ivory Coast saw a large influx of refugees pour into Liberia in 2011 we launched a response to support more than 80,000 people. Here an Oxfam-organised committee cleans up a refugee campsite and latrines.

The impact of our work

 Women used to have to wait for money from their husbands to buy salt. We [at the Virtuous Women co-operative] give women the confidence and skills to move around by herself.
