 There are a lot of reasons for the high levels of poverty in Georgia - inadequate policies, poor governance, the difficulties people face earning a decent living and finding decent health care, a lack of infrastructure, recent conflicts, a growing number of disasters... It's a long list.

So Oxfam works to help people in a lot of different ways, always pushing for better governance and better awareness of people's rights. We help farmers, making it possible for people to get credit. We support efforts to prepare people for disasters. And we improve access to health services. In ten years of leadership, my team has achieved results that make me very proud.

Oxfam works closely with poor and displaced people to help them make a better living from their land. In Samagrelo and Adjara regions we’ve been building greenhouses for vulnerable families so that they can grow vegetables throughout the year. Dodo Shengalia is one beneficiary of the programme. "I can say happily that with the first income from my greenhouse I managed to cover the cost of my daughter's education."

  • People who cannot afford vital medicines often go without in Georgia. Here, a doctor examines a young girl at Oxfam's newly renovated health clinic in Zugdidi. We've also set up rural community health financing schemes and supporting training sessions for physicians and nurses to help ensure as many people as possible are able to access primary health care.
  • When conflict broke out with Russia in 2008, Oxfam responded quickly to provide support to those affected by the fighting. Today, an estimated 400,000 people remain displaced in Georgia. Oxfam's 'Together We Can' project brings together people affected by conflict, helping displaced people and host communities voice their needs and protect their rights.

The impact of our work

 Thanks to Oxfam, my son was able to learn new skills and knowledge and is now employed by the local businessmen who run greenhouses nearby. I use the extra money [I earn] to give my grandson a better education and to take care of my health.
