Reaction: Government pledge on nature and biodiversity funding

Responding to the announcement that the UK Government will spend at least £3 billion of international climate finance on nature and biodiversity over five years, Oxfam’s Senior Policy Advisor on Climate Change Tracy Carty said:

“This announcement raises concerns that the UK’s shrinking aid budget is being repurposed to pay for nature and biodiversity. As important as these are, the first priority of overseas aid should be the alleviation of poverty. This aid is more important than ever as the poorest communities face greater poverty and hunger due to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as conflict and climate change.

“The Government should reconsider its plans to cut the aid budget to 0.5 percent of gross national income and ensure that every pound is focused on reducing global poverty.”
