There have been some media reports that Oxfam “failed to vet staff” and that an “investigation” was launched against us because of this. These claims are inaccurate and it’s important to correct them.

In 2024, Oxfam’s own internal processes identified inconsistencies in some referencing practices and background checks. We found this ourselves and self-reported it to the Charity Commission. We acted quickly to remediate the issues, and kept the regulator informed throughout. The Charity Commission did not open a formal investigation and is satisfied the actions taken were reasonable and complete.

Following a thorough review, Oxfam is confident that no one was recruited who should not have been.

This matter is now concluded. Oxfam is confident in its strengthened background check and referencing processes going forward and remains committed to continually learning to make Oxfam a safer place for all.
