Oxfam response to reports of cut to aid budget

In response to reports that ministers have drawn up plans to reduce the proportion of Britain’s gross national income spent on aid from 0.7 per cent to 0.5 per cent, Sam Nadel, Oxfam’s Head of Policy and Advocacy said:

“Cutting the aid budget, which has already been reduced in line with the drop in national income, would mean less money for the poorest communities just when they need it most.

“It would be a false economy which would cut off a vital lifeline to some of the world’s poorest people at a time of rising poverty and have serious implications in the fight against COVID-19.

“Supporting people at home through the pandemic shouldn’t come at the cost of our obligations as Global Britain. Cutting aid undermines Britain’s moral authority at a time when it needs it more than ever as it gears up to host next year’s G7 summit and the UN Climate Change negotiations.”
