Responding to the Government's Spending Review, Halima Begum, Chief Executive, Oxfam GB said:

"While Oxfam welcomes some of the measures announced to help deliver key services, this Spending Review cannot disguise the fact the Government is falling short on its responsibilities at home, to our most vulnerable and impoverished communities, and abroad where those living through conflict and climate disaster are seeing their suffering compounded by swingeing aid cuts.

"Unfortunately, women and girls are once again the most disproportionately impacted. In the current climate, the government should also be highly sensitive to the fact that, if a budget cannot offer effective measures to reduce inequality, it also risks creating a vacuum for the far right.

"Those with the broadest shoulders could certainly do far more to carry the burden. Oxfam reiterates its recommendation for a modest 2 per cent wealth tax on those with assets of £10 million or more, which would raise £24 billion a year – a call that is backed by so many fair-minded people across the country."
