Reaction to launch of new coronavirus vaccine financing tool

“Gavi – and the governments behind it – rightly recognise that price could prevent millions of people across the developing world being vaccinated against coronavirus. Their solution needs to avoid repeating the costly mistakes of the past, when they sought to subsidise the high prices charged by the pharmaceutical industry rather than seeking to bring them down which ignored the needs of middle-income countries.

“Governments should stand up to the pharmaceutical industry and insist that taxpayer’s money is only invested in vaccines that are patent free and available for all.”
