Reacting to the attack at a synagogue in Manchester, Dr Halima Begum, CEO of Oxfam GB, said:

"We are deeply saddened by the absolutely appalling and distressing scenes in Manchester today. Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those affected and the entire Jewish community. Antisemitism and hatred in any form have no place in our society. All human life is sacred.

"This comes after a rising tide of racism - from last year’s riots, to demonstrations outside asylum accommodation sites and the most recent far-right rally in London emboldening racism and promoting hate speech. We are seeing the damage caused when division and scapegoating are allowed to grow unchecked.

"As an organisation committed to tackling poverty and inequality, we know that discrimination and hatred only deepen injustice. Oxfam stands in solidarity with communities everywhere working for peace, dignity, and respect.

"Together, we must build a tomorrow free from violence and hate."
