Distributing food assistance in Chad
Floods in the Lake Chad region have impacted over 1.6 million people.
In a region of Western Central Africa that has already been made vulnerable by internal conflict and terrorism, large numbers of people have been displaced due to climate change.
The floods in Chad have destroyed nearly 200,000 homes and led to the loss of 66,574 farm animals and 355,582 acres of fields.
What is happening in Lake Chad?
Once one of the world's largest lakes, bordered by Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, Lake Chad has been shrinking, losing 90% of its surface area since the 1960's. This is due to lower rainfall, higher temperatures, and increased demands on water supply.
Climate change and conflict has put agricultural and fishing livelihoods under strain, meaning many households have lost their primary source of food and income.
The region now experiences frequent droughts and flooding, leading to an escalating hunger crisis and forcing many to flee their homes. Millions of people have been displaced and lack access to water, food, and healthcare.
Displaced people are also more vulnerable to violence from armed groups that operate in the region.
“Every time there are floods, we are often exposed to attacks by armed groups, forcing us to flee for safety.”

Yaka has lost six of her seven children because of the climate crisis. However, she continues to rebuild her life.
About the Project
Over a period of nine months (until March 31, 2026), this project aims to reach 11,543 people. The focus will be on the following areas:
- Supporting affected communities through the distribution of food and cash.
- Preventing malnutrition by distributing ingredients for enriched porridge.
- Supplying farmers with seeds adapted to local weather conditions alongside tools to work the land more easily.
Food distribution has been organised to provide nutritional supplements to families with infants and young children in Koudoubol, Lake Chad, Chad.
Each child is provided with a food package containing six items. These ingredients will allow families to prepare nutrient-rich porridge, essential for improving the nutritional status of the children.”
