The visionary: Luu Thi Yen Hang

In Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, where most of the country’s rice is grown, Luu is doing more than running a business – she’s rethinking how farming can work for everyone.

Reimagining the future of farming

“I was born into a farming family – I’m a true farmer at heart,” says Luu Thi Yen Hang.

When she founded Hong Tan Rice Company in 2017, she had a clear vision: to create a better, fairer way for farmers and businesses to work together. But building that future wasn’t easy.

“I shared everything I knew about rice farming with the farmers,” Luu says. “Gradually, they began to trust me.”

Collective progress

Many farmers were used to working alone, often facing unstable prices and uncertain incomes. Luu saw the need for something different – stronger partnerships, better quality, and more sustainable ways of growing rice.

“I joined every training session Oxfam organised,” she recalls. “The project came at just the right time, when I was struggling to find a direction for my business.”

Through Oxfam’s support, Luu gained new skills in business management and sustainable production. She began working closely with farmers and cooperatives, introducing practices that improve quality, reduce costs, and protect the environment.

“Farmers planted a lot of seeds, used large amounts of fertilizers and pesticides, but the yield was low,” she explains. “In the end, they didn’t benefit.”

A new, thriving network

Today, those relationships have grown into a thriving network. What started with just a few cooperatives has expanded across the region – creating more stable incomes for farmers and a stronger, more resilient local economy.

“The inclusive business approach I learned has brought Hong Tan many benefits – valuable experience, a trusted brand, and strong partnerships with farmers and local authorities,” Luu says.

But for her, success isn’t just about business growth – it’s about people.

By bringing farmers, communities and businesses together, Luu is helping to build a more sustainable future – one where everyone can share in the benefits.
