Luni's story

In 2022, floods destroyed Luni’s village in Pakistan, washing away houses and infrastructure. Luni and others in her village were helped with emergency relief items, but the biggest change came eight months later – when Luni learnt how to make new stoves for her community.

These stoves are created using mud, which is moulded around a frame and then left to dry. And crucially, this new design is more efficient and environmentally friendly than traditional wood-burning stoves, as it traps more heat, saving on cooking time and wood.

Luni herself has already installed 24 stoves in her village – getting paid to do so through a community initiative. “To be able to do something on my own gives me a sense of independence,“ she says.

Luni’s story shows just how transformative a small cash grant from Oxfam’s Emergency Response Fund can be.
