Bangladesh Floods Appeal
In Summer 2024, five million people were affected by flash floods in Bangladesh. Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced and left many without access to basic things like food and clean water.
Oxfam and partners are delivering aid to people affected by these floods.
What’s happening in Bangladesh
- Over 5 million people were affected by the floods
- Hundreds of thousands of people were displaced and left in desperate need of aid
- Homes and infrastructure were been completely destroyed
- The floods caused extensive damage to livestock, fisheries, and agriculture leaving people with limited or no access to food
- People had no access to clean water
In 2024, Bangladesh faced one of its worst floods in recent years. Relentless rainfall, overflowing rivers, and water releases from India triggered flash floods across 12 districts, including Feni, Cumilla, Chittagong, and Sylhet.
Millions of people were left without shelter and many lost their lives.
Homes, infrastructure, and vast areas of farmland were destroyed, leaving millions without access to necessities like food, clean water, and medical care. The situation was particularly bad in remote areas, where blocked roads severely hampered rescue and relief efforts.
Bangladesh is extremely vulnerable to climate change. Those who have done the least to cause it are paying the highest price.
Oxfam and partners are calling on the international community and donors to stand with communities hit by this disaster.
The floodwaters have ravaged homes, destroyed critical infrastructure, and submerged vast agricultural land across districts, including Cumilla, Noakhali, Feni, Chittagong, and Sylhet. Feni district has been particularly hard hit, with residents struggling to survive amid limited access to food, clean water, and medical care.”

What is Oxfam doing in Bangladesh?
The floods have caused severe damage to homes, infrastructure, and agricultural land.
Oxfam worked with partners and local authorities to assess immediate needs. Together with partners, Oxfam has been providing essential items such as hygiene and dignity kits, baby food, cooked meals and cash assistance.
The floods meant that people had a lack of access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Oxfam and partners worked to provide safe drinking water and sanitation facilities, and to rehabilitate water systems.
Women and girls were among the worst affected. Oxfam worked with partner organisations to ensure women and girls who may be more at risk were supported.
How we spend your donation
For every £1 you donate to this emergency appeal, we will allocate 9p of your donation to cover general support and running costs. There is a small chance that we will raise more money than is needed for this appeal. If this happens, we’ll spend any additional funds on other Oxfam projects – wherever the need is greatest.
