Free Will writing service FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions

We can offer our free Will writing service because Oxfam takes on the cost and although 65% of people choose to leave a gift to Oxfam, this is not a requirement.

Even so, we’re incredibly grateful for anything we receive. Your gift, no matter how large or small, is one of the most powerful ways you can ensure that future generations get the opportunity to live in a fairer, more just, and more equitable world.

Find out why other supporters, like Neil, have chosen to include Oxfam in their Will.

A simple Will is a straightforward, legal document for individuals with uncomplicated estates who wish to leave their assets directly to a spouse, partner, or children.

Typically, a simple Will names executors to manage the estate, appoints guardians for children under 18, and covers the distribution of assets without complex trusts or tax planning.

This type of Will is ideal for straightforward estates, such as married couples with children or single individuals with simple, direct gifts.

It is not suitable, however, if you wish to include complex arrangements like lifetime trusts, tax-efficient planning for large estates subject to inheritance tax (over £325,000 per individual), or complex business assets.

Yes, it does. If you live in England and Wales, all four services are available to you.

If you live in Scotland, the available services are the local solicitor option and over the phone via Farewill. If you’re not using our Free Will service and want to leave a gift to Oxfam, we recommend consulting a solicitor in Scotland to ensure your Will complies with the Scottish legal system.

If you live in Northern Ireland, you can access Oxfam Ireland’s free Will writing service.

Once you’ve made key decisions about where you want your money and belongings to go, our Will-writing service is surprisingly easy.

Yes, you and your partner can make mirror Wills using our Free Will Service. Or, if you would like, you can write your Wills separately.

Mirror Wills are the standard Wills a couple (married or not) may make which simply mirror each other. Instead of making two separate Wills with identical provisions, a mirror Will is a more cost-effective option for couples if they both want the same things.

If you and your partner would like mirror Wills, only one of you need apply for the service.

Please let your provider know this is your intention at first contact, or when providing your Will instructions. If you would like to make separate Wills, however, then both of you will need to make a request.

You can choose to name Oxfam GB as an executor if needed, however please be aware that due to limited in-house capacity we will then have to instruct external solicitors to deal with the estate on our behalf. For this reason we advise that you appoint solicitors or trusted individuals to administer your Will instead. We would recommend choosing at least two executors.

We usually ask people not to specify where they want their gift to go. That’s because the projects and countries we work in are always changing. And ultimately, a gift in your Will is a long-term promise to invest in Oxfam’s work, wherever it’s most needed.

However, if you do specify a region as the beneficiary of your gift, we will work hard to honour that request.
