Break the silence on humanitarian crises

  • Conflict and climate disasters mean millions of people across the world are facing violence, hunger, displacement and death.
  • Yet, the response to many humanitarian crises - from world leaders, the media, and global institutions – is radio silence.
  • The UK Government must not be silent in the face of international law violations, and must do more to support people enduring unimaginable horrors.

No More Radio Silence

Devasting humanitarian crises are happening across the world, right now.

Palestinians continue to face genocide and violent occupation. And in Sudan and South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen, and beyond, people are facing conflict, displacement and suffering on an enormous scale. But when it comes to these countries and people – world leaders, the media, and global institutions are choosing radio silence.

When we don’t hear about a humanitarian crisis, it’s often because of choices being made. Some stories simply aren’t prioritised. Some aren't in the interests of those in power.

Silence serves the system. It's speaking out that serves us all.

So, it’s time to get loud. Loud about the crises happening across the world. Loud about the fact that our leaders must act.

Together we are speaking up: we demand the UK Government not be silent in the face of international law violations, and must increase the amount of aid going to the worst affected places and communities.

When people are experiencing their darkest moments, we remember that we are all connected. Let’s make so much noise that every neglected humanitarian crisis becomes impossible to ignore.

Our letter to the Foreign Secretary

“From the Democratic Republic of Congo to South Sudan, Yemen to Palestine, people are enduring some of the world's worst humanitarian crises. People's rights to safety and dignity are being systematically violated, and many can’t access even the most basic needs like food, shelter, and water.

The UK Government can – and must – do more to support people facing these crises.

I'm calling on you to use your power as Foreign Secretary, to ensure the UK Government upholds its commitment to International Humanitarian Law, and moves beyond condemnation, towards concrete action. This includes strengthening accountability mechanisms, and working with partners to address the root causes of the crises that people have been forced to endure for so long.

This must be accompanied by sustained funding commitments, which are vital to respond to fast growing humanitarian needs. The UK Government must ensure principled humanitarian assistance is reaching people in urgent need - with decisions led by national and local humanitarian actors.

People in the UK are proud to speak out, to look out for people who are suffering, and to stand up for what's right.”

Petitions are an important way to show how many people care about an issue. This is one powerful tactic to put pressure on decision makers. Whether by getting media attention, supporting our public campaigning activity, or helping us to show MPs and the government that there is public demand to make certain changes. The louder we raise our collective voice, the harder we are to ignore.
