Volunteer Finance Assistants (Newcastle upon Tyne)

Gain valuable work experience in the area of finance by assisting with the processing of shop income and expenditure for all of Oxfam's shops.

Context

Oxfam Shops provide an essential source of income for Oxfam's work. In this role you will gain valuable work experience in the area of finance by assisting with the recording and processing of the shop income and/or associated expenditure for all of Oxfam's shops. 

We can offer a range of volunteering arrangements that best suits your needs – the minimum requirement is one half day per week. The Newcastle office is open Monday to Friday. Volunteer shifts are: mornings 9.30am to 1pm and afternoons 2pm to 5pm.

This role requires attendance at the Newcastle office therefore only suits people already living in Newcastle upon Tyne or surrounding area.

Examples of some key responsibilities

Income

  • Bank reconciliation work, including analysing, matching and amending items through journal entry as appropriate
  • Preparing bank statement and cash book information to load into the bank reconciliation module
  • Gathering information and collating into documents to provide audit trails to support gift aided sales and donations
  • Assisting in creating management information reports

Expenditure

  • Collating bank information to set up standing orders. Checking accuracy of set-up by bank
  • Problem solving and dealing with queries
  • Submitting invoices to budget holders for approval
  • Checking the accuracy of invoices for payment and ensuring correct authorisation is given.

Other

  • Admin tasks including emailing/phoning suppliers, chasing approvals, updating records etc

Skills and competencies

You do not need previous experience but some or all of the following skills will be useful:

  • Interest in finance and developing financial skills including analysing and interpreting financial data
  • High level of numeracy (essential)
  • Good attention to detail (essential)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly in Excel
  • Ability to work as part of a team and under own initiative
  • Good organisational skills
