Cutting UK aid would leave all of us paying a higher price

Oxfam has responded to news the Conservative Party is proposing cuts to UK Aid, calling on them to continue the support of the 2010 Conservative-led coalition.

“

The Conservative-led coalition government were strong supporters of the UK Aid budget and argued that maintaining a commitment to 0.7% gave Britain significant moral authority. They were right. And we urge the current Conservative Party to do likewise. Their proposal to cut UK aid would leave all of us, globally and in the UK, paying a higher price in the future.”

Richard Hawkes, Oxfam chief executive

Richard Hawkes added: β€œAt a time when the UK is about to take over the Presidency of the G20, we should be leading the world in fighting the global threats of conflict, climate change and the challenges of extreme poverty and inequality. The last thing we should be doing now is damaging our international reputation and diminishing our ability to show moral leadership.”
