Major earthquakes strike Venezuela amid ongoing humanitarian crisis

Published on

Two major earthquakes have struck Venezuela; an as-yet-undetermined number of deaths and injuries have been reported. There is severe property damage, disruptions to basic services, and emergency teams have been deployed to the affected areas.

This event compounds an already severe humanitarian crisis: as of early 2026, an estimated 7.9 million people in Venezuela were in need of humanitarian assistance. The current situation could further worsen the living conditions of thousands of people.

Our partners - local organizations working directly on the ground - are conducting initial assessments to determine the extent of the damage and the most urgent needs of the affected communities.

At Oxfam, we will activate our solidarity mechanisms to support the humanitarian response, in coordination with our local partners and in accordance with our operational capacities. We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the most affected populations, prioritizing relevant, timely, and community-centered actions.
