Oxfam has responded to the news that the minister for development role has been downgraded and the new minister will not attend Cabinet.
“We warmly welcome Kirsty McNeill's appointment, she has been a bold champion for women and children internationally. It is, however, disappointing that development will no longer be represented at Cabinet level. At a time when aid budgets have been cut and humanitarian needs are rising, this sends the wrong signal about the UK's commitment to tackling poverty and inequality around the world. We know the new Minister has long recognised the importance of the 0.7% target, and we hope the UK Government now shows development remains a priority by restoring the aid budget and putting more power and resources into the hands of local communities and women-led organisations.”
