Oxfam: Next leader must stand for human rights, end aid cuts and reject division

Published on

Keir Starmer's resignation must open door to leadership that stands for human rights, justice and solidarity - at home and around the world.

Jean McClean, Chief Influencing Officer at Oxfam GB, said: "Keir Starmer's resignation marks an opportunity for reflection on the kind of leadership our country needs.

"The next Prime Minister needs to stand firmly for a kinder, radically better world - one that stands firmly for human rights, international law, and climate and gender justice.

"From Palestine to South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Yemen to Myanmar - globally, millions of people are facing conflict, displacement and humanitarian need. Aid cuts, shrinking civic space and the erosion of global solidarity have left many deeply concerned about the UK's role in the world.

"We must reject the scapegoating of minority communities and challenge the politics of division. At home, and around the world, we need to work for a fairer, green world.

"Hope lies in building a society that is kinder and more united, both within our borders and beyond them, so everyone has the power to thrive, not just survive."
