Commenting on an announcement today by the governments of the UK’s Crown Dependencies Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man that they are committing to introduce public registers of beneficial ownership information of companies, Oxfam’s head of inequality Rebecca Gowland said:
“This has the potential to be a real step forward – greater transparency will make it easier to detect and prevent tax dodging that costs poor countries billions each year that could be spent on schools and hospitals.
“We urge the Crown Dependencies to move forward without delay and legislate to implement registers before 2022 that are fully and freely accessible to the public, to ensure proper scrutiny and accountability.”
