In response to the release of the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) provisional statistics report on how UK aid was spent in 2023, Oxfam’s head of policy and advocacy, Katy Chakrabortty said:

“The provisional figures show the Government continues to spend too much of an already dwindling aid budget at home – with over a quarter of the budget now spent in the UK.

“Vital aid money should not be used to prop up the Government’s broken asylum system at the expense of thousands of people struggling to survive in some of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.

“Amid rising global poverty, insecurity, and inequality, the UK should be stepping up to protect lives, not cutting off crucial lifelines when they are needed most.”
