In response to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s speech at Cop27, Danny Sriskandarajah, Oxfam GB Chief Executive said:

“The renewed commitment to adaptation by the Prime Minister is welcome but his silence on loss and damage, the defining issue of this COP, is deafening.

“Rich nations like the UK, which have done most to contribute to climate change, have a moral obligation to provide funding to help low income countries deal with the devastating impacts of an escalating climate crisis they did little to cause.

“The Government’s plans for new North Sea oil and gas projects backtracks on vital climate commitments when we should be demonstrating global leadership through investment in our own abundant renewables.

“The Prime Minister has a huge responsibility to deliver on promises made at Cop26 in Glasgow last year and to encourage other countries to deliver on existing pledges and commitments. Words must now be backed up with meaningful action.”
