In response to today’s announcement on the Loss and Damage Fund and the pledge from the UK Government, Chiara Liguori, Oxfam’s Senior Climate Justice Policy Advisor said:
“It is encouraging to see that the UK Government is committed to making the Loss and Damage Fund a reality, but this pledge is simply not enough and crucially, it’s not new money.
“As a huge historical emitter, the UK can and should be stepping up with the new and additional funding urgently needed for a fair transition to renewable energy and to support people in lower-income countries bearing the brunt of the climate crisis. The Government can find this money by making richest and biggest polluters pay.”
“The progress made today at COP28 on loss and damage is a valuable step towards supporting people facing the devastating consequences of climate-fuelled disasters to recover and adapt. However, much work remains to ensure the funding can truly benefit the communities most affected."
