Oxfam: As temperatures rise, so too must the urgency of climate action

Published on

As the UK faces another extreme heatwave, Oxfam says that urgent action is needed to cut emissions, strengthen resilience and ensure that those most responsible for the climate crisis contribute fairly to solutions.

Beth John, Climate Justice Adviser at Oxfam:

"This week’s heatwave is not just an anomaly; it’s a severe wake-up call. The dangerous temperatures we're seeing across the UK are not just an inconvenience - they are a stark warning of the human cost of climate change and a glimpse of the future we're heading towards unless action accelerates. Scientists have warned for years that a warming world would bring more frequent, more intense and more dangerous heatwaves. Those warnings are becoming reality before our eyes.

“As temperatures rise, so too must the urgency of climate action. Wealthy polluters who rely on private jets and superyachts along with corporations that are making vast profits from fossil fuels and have done the most to cause this crisis, must pay their fair share towards the transition to a safer, cleaner future.

“The Climate Change Committee warned today that the UK’s transition to clean electricity is not happening fast enough, so people are continuing to pay the price of fossil fuel dependence. Its latest report calls for the UK government to move faster to reduce emissions to protect households from fossil fuel price shocks.

“Today’s report shows the UK must go further and faster in its climate policies, to move us towards a safer, greener future and to prevent a dangerously overheating world.”
