Oxfam helping survivors in Nepal affected by devastating flash floods

Oxfam and our partners in Nepal are responding after a major flash flood struck Nepal and washed away villages and infrastructure project sites while damaging roads, bridges and hydropower infrastructure.

A major flash flood struck Nepal in the early hours of 26 August, severely affecting Syapru Besi and Timure near the Tibet border. Flood water and debris caused widespread impact downstream to communities along the Nepali Trishuli river, creating a continued risk of secondary flooding, landslides and disruption to vital infrastructures.

The collapse of roads, bridges, and communications has severely hampered relief efforts. For now, reaching the hardest-hit communities depends almost entirely on air access.

The rivers are full of debris and sewage, and there is no piped supply left to fall back on. Getting clean water and safe sanitation to most affected people into these valleys is the priority.

Families need hygiene supplies, emergency shelter and food. The Government of Nepal estimates that over 8,600 households – nearly 40,000 people – require emergency hygiene support and water purification, in addition to over 3,000 dignity kits and nearly 4,000 baby kits for children under five

Oxfam is closely following the situation and is in contact with our partners on the ground to support the emerging humanitarian needs.

Water systems have been contaminated and thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes. Priorities include:

• water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH)
• food
• protection and shelter.

Oxfam and partners are supplying emergency hygiene kits and water purification solutions for 200 households in the hardest hit Rasuwa district.

Temporary shelters and more emergency WASH and hygiene kits are being mobilised.

Oxfam's Nepal Floods Appeal is supporting communities in the most affected areas including Dhading and Nuwakot districts.
